How do I potty train my puppy, you ask? Remember, accidents will happen with any puppy during the potty-training process. What do we do when our puppy does accidently go potty in the wrong place?
Interrupt them and take them outside to finish. Clap or make a sudden noise to interrupt them from going on the floor and take them immediately outside. Make sure you reward them for going potty outside afterwards!
Clean up the spot with an enzymatic cleaner. Average household cleaners will not get the scent of a marked spot out completely. We might not be able to smell it, but our dogs can! Most pet stores sell enzymatic cleaners that break down the scents even for our dogs so that they are not encouraged to go back to the same spots repeatedly. We have personally used and found Natures Miracle to be great at getting rid of not only the smell but the stain as well.
Avoid punishment. Our puppies are learning. We want to foster a safe environment where we work with them as a team to succeed. Punishing behaviors such as potty training will often teach your puppy to instead perform those behaviors when you are not around. Punishment also breaks down trust and can make your puppy fearful of you!
